Melida Bowen (メリダ ボーウェン Merida Bōuen) is Shin's adopted Grandmother, the famous Guru who created magical gear through powerful enchantments. She used to be married to Merlin but due to unknown reasons, the two divorced.
Appearance[]
Melida, as Shin described, is an old lady who wears a pair of glasses, a black robe and a pointed hat, and emits the aura of a “Witch.” She has a tall stature, handsome appearance, and has an incredibly good sense of style. In the anime, when she is in her normal attire she wears a purple shawl over a light purple dress. She also can be seen wearing a heavier tan outerwear secured with a red brooch. Her typical formal wear is that of a distinguised white robe with dark purple edging.
Thanks to a magic tool that Shin created based on an exercise machine, Melinda is noted to have an impressive figure even in her 70's.
In her youth, Melida was noted as very beautiful with a sexy body.
When Melida lashes out at Merlin or Shin, she sometimes is drawn with fangs or serrated teeth.

Personality[]
Melida often nags Shin when he does something she considers to be dangerous or unnecessarily powerful. She also berates Merlin whenever it happens as he encourages Shin to explore the limits of his magic. Whenever anyone talks about her role in raising Shin in his youth, she casually remarks about how much attention he required due to his ability to consistently get himself into dangerous situations. That being said, she is very fond of him and has come to care for him as if he were her own biological grandson. Just like Merlin, whenever Shin becomes the center of political attention she becomes protective of her grandson to the point of threatening to cease formal dealings with any country considering to use him for their own gain. As Merlin noted, Melida cannot seem to gracefully accept a compliment. Any recognition she receives for her work in magical gear and enchanment causes her to become embarrassed and to downplay her contribution. Like Merlin, Melida prefers the solitude and privacy of the countryside as far away from cities as possible due to the attention their exploits received in their younger years. Melida is also very quick to assess social situations as she quickly deduced the reasoning behind Silizien's desire for Shin's protection. She also quickly picked up on the blossoming romance between the two. Another example of this was when she remarked on Merlin's efforts to learn Gate magic in order to normalize Shin's incredible magic abilities so others would treat him more normally. When the occasion arises, she enjoys poking fun at Merlin's exploits causing him to become embarrassed.
Background[]
Years prior to the start of the series, Melida fought alongside Merlin as his wife. They rose to fame when they were called upon to fight the infamous demonized human. As Shin grew up, she became his instructor in magical gear enchantments at the insistence of Merlin. Over the course of her career, she specialized herself in magic gear enchantment and would become the obvious choice for Shin's instruction. She and Merlin had a son named Train, born a few years prior to their subjugation of the demon, who was killed by a demonic beast due to them being "weak-minded".
Chronology[]
Melida is seen approaching Merlin's cabin with Michel as 8 year old Shin returns from hunting in the forest. As she discovers the results of his hunt, she expresses disbelief and concern over an 8 year old hunting boar in the forest. As Shin turns 10, Melida is seen having a conversation with Merlin and Michel about Shin's abnormal ability to master magic and his ability to keep up with Michel's fight instruction. She expressed belief that it was possible that Shin came from another world due to his ability to enchant items in the "original tongue".
Melida was in attendence at Shin's 15th birthday party where he officially was recognized as a grown man. She (along with the others in attendence) express disbelief and concern over the lack of instruction Merlin gave Shin in common practices, such as shopping. During the demonstration of Shin's prowess at destruction magic, she heavily berates both Merlin and Shin for not teaching Shin prudence.
