Merlin specializes in magic control, the ability that he can create attack magics without chants are justified by his good magic control. His ability to materialize or imagine magics are part of his repertoire as he was able to create a "Gate", original magic of Shin after Shin illustrated it and showed him two points touching on a folded piece of paper. Merlin taught Shin and later even the members of Ultimate Magic Research Society.

Merlin is adept at chantless magic and had taught this to Shin. It was never mentioned how he learned about this but Melinda mentioned that it was because of Merlin's chantless magic that most people mistakes and get difficulties in creating and imagining magic.

Merlin is known to have powerful magic, it is also an effect of his huge magic control since the more magic one can control, the strong the attack power of their magics.
